Part II: The rise coups in Africa: Charting the way forward

Key Takeaways:
The session kicked off with a Global Talent Quiz. We spent weeks educating the community about Global Talent Visas and we thought it was time to test who had been paying attention. Participants put their knowledge to the test, demonstrating their engagement with our previous discussions on Global Talent Visas. Dr. Victor Livingstone, who turned up at most of the sessions, totally cleaned up and won the $25 prize.
The second part of the session was titled "Whatβs with the Coups Across Africa? Letβs Talk! π₯π." This segment served as a continuation of the previous Town Hall session where we explored the rise of coups in Africa. Co-host, Epihania, provided a thorough overview of historical coups in specific African countries and their underlying causes.
Various key points emerged. These included the importance of governments making thoughtful decisions to prioritise civilian welfare when formulating policies and initiatives. It was also highlighted that eliminating coups in African countries requires collective effort rather than individual actions. However, there was a perspective that coups may seem unavoidable due to limited awareness of western intervention in African affairs. Another key solution proposed was the establishment of good governance and a shift in focus from consumption to production. Lastly, the discussion underscored the need for a thorough examination of the system, including constitutional reforms and a transition to democratic governance, as a way to prevent coups in African countries.
